When ALIAS Chamber Ensemble recorded part of its upcoming CD back in January 2012, they were joined by a special guest: The composer of the music, Kenji Bunch, who is also a first-rate virtuoso violist.

Delos Records will be releasing ALIAS’ second recording, “Boiling Point”, on September 25 at an event at the CMA Atrium on Nashville’s Music Row. The CD is a collection of Bunch’s chamber music, and includes “String Circle”, a string quintet which Kenji recorded with musicians of ALIAS.

At the end of the session that day, Kenji and ALIAS cellist Matt Walker sat down and played an impromptu jam, which turned out to be loosely based on one of the themes from the quintet. Matt and Kenji share a penchant for playing “non-classical” styles such as blues, jazz, and bluegrass.

The result: “Double Down”, a mostly-improvised piece which will be available for digital download only, as a “bonus track” to go with the “Boiling Point” CD.
